We're excited to share that the Mill Brook Civic Association awarded a $500 scholarship to Melissa Gueye from Valley Stream South High School. Based on her winning essay, Melissa was awarded this scholarship which was presented to her by our MBCA Board Member, Mara Steindam on Thursday, June 15th.

Melissa attends SUNY Albany as a Chemistry major and we're proud to be able to support Melissa's future. All the best to Melissa!

Mill Brook Civic Association South High School Scholarship Winner, Seancris Luyun

Seancris Luyun was the 2019 recipient of a $500 scholarship given each year by the civic association. For his winning essay, Seancris was presented with the award by MBCA board member Yadlynd Cherubin-Eide at the SHS awards ceremony on June 12th. We wish him, and all of Mill Brook’s graduates, the brightest of futures.

The civic association provided the supplies, but Trish and her hard-working volunteers made it happen. Our next garden event will be in the fall. New Community Council

Police Commissioner Forms New Community Council

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder officially kicked into gear his Community Council, a police task force with a subdivision in each of the county’s 19 legislative districts.

Ryder and County Executive Laura Curran worked with the county’s 19 legislators to select residents who “have a finger on the pulse of their communities,” Curran said. On April 9 at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, a room full of residents were sworn into their positions.

The members of the community council have agreed to volunteer their time to address the specific issues plaguing their community. They will be meeting with county police and their legislator, periodically, to develop plans of action and discuss what can be done to curb local crime. Eventually, an executive community council will be chosen to oversee the other 19 groups.

“When you speak to people from different communities, that’s when you start to understand each other’s cultures, and understand what the needs are for each community,” Ryder said. “And that’s what we intend to do with this community council.”

Sanitation has begun a new recycling program, and also altered our regular pickup schedule. Notices were hung on doorknobs throughout Mill Brook, but in the event you misplaced or did not receive yours, the information can be found here. In addition, their website has an interactive feature that allows you to enter a street name (example: Woodland, Cloverfield, Southgate) and you are shown a calendar marked with your pickup dates. Go to http://sanitarydistrict1.com/ and click on What Day is My Pickup? If you no longer have a yellow recycling receptacle, call 516-239-5600 to request one. For specific issues with Sanitation, call George Pappas at (516) 996-0057 .

This year’s winning essay was written by South High School senior and Mill Brook resident, Demi Moore, pictured here with MBCA Vice-President Linda Kettering and board member John Campbell. The $500 scholarship was presented to Demi at a SHS ceremony on June 3rd. We join the entire community in congratulating Demi on her outstanding achievement.
